Bristow defers some deliveries and freezes executive salaries

“We look forward to better days.”
That is how Bill Chiles, CEO of oil service helicopter operator Bristow Group, ended the company’s investor conference call earlier this month. Over the last year the company’s stock has been slammed, plunging from $58.51 to $16.45, before making a respectable rebound to near $30 in recent weeks, even as company revenues doubled. The revenue jump c more

Timken’s Extex buy boosts PMA capabilities

The newly formed Timken Aerospace Aftermarket Solutions business unit is at Heli-Expo this week (Booth No. 3718) to discuss its expanded capabilities brought about by Timken’s acquisition last October of the Arizona turbine engine parts manufacturing firm Extex.
Larry Shiembob, general manager for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) at the new facility in Mesa, Ariz., said that Extex, more

Trade groups push for night use of NVG/EVS

A trio of helicopter trade associations are recommending that the FAA mandate night-vision goggles, enhanced-vision systems or IFR-only operations for all night flights of EMS helicopters. The recommendations overlap many key advisories made by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in 2006.
The industry proposals were made one week before the NTSB held highly visible public heari more

Industry perspective: Eurocopter

The fundamentals driving the helicopter industry remain intact, even as tight credit and a global recession compound to put the brakes on helicopter sales. Eurocopter’s order backlog stands at more than $18 billion–including a number of large military contracts. Industry perspective: Robinson Helicopter

Frank Robinson, who turned 79 in January, likes to joke about his employees forcing him into retirement to pay him back for asking a former employee to retire at age 80. However, it is difficult to imagine Robinson Helicopter without Frank Robinson at the helm, although his children Terry and Kurt occupy leadership positions at the Torrance, Calif. company. Robinson is comfortable with leaving more

For LAFD, AW139 choice came down to raw power

The Los Angeles Fire Department’s decision to acquire AgustaWestland AW139s came down to a simple value equation: nearly twice the horsepower of their current Bell 412s for only a small increase in direct operating costs. “The bang you get for the buck is much cheaper,” said battalion chief Joseph Foley. The AW139 is powered by twin Pratt & Whitney PW PT6C-67Cs rated at 1,679 shp each, max c more

Cobham cockpit comes together

The fusion of Chelton Flight Systems/S-TEC Chelton, Inc. and Wulfsberg Electronics as component companies of Cobham Avionics and Surveillance is evident in the helicopter cockpit mockup at the Cobham booth (No. 434). What the company calls “The Cobham Cockpit” combines technology drawn into a full system integrator from formerly separate providers of discrete components and products.

Billings Air Service has awarded a contract to Vector Aerospace Helicopter Services North America-Langley (Booth No. 2922) to complete a shortening modification on a Sikorsky S-61 helicopter.
It has been nearly 10 years since Vector Aerospace performed a modification of this type, which involves shortening the aircraft by approximately 48 inches. The announcement of this contract has since more

CareFlite integrating WAAS into approaches

HEMS operator CareFlite is working with the FAA’s Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) Program Office to help quantify WAAS benefits to HEMS operations.
CareFlite currently has 18 helipad GPS approaches and will begin integrating WAAS into these approach procedures, beginning with four regional trauma centers in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
As part of the three-year project, more

FAA gives Sandel an attitude adjustment

Sandel Avionics has received FAA approval for a new reversionary attitude mode for two of its electronic primary navigation displays, allowing aircraft pitch-and-roll symbology to be presented on the nav display in the event of primary attitude indicator failure. The feature is available now for the company’s SN3500 (3ATI) and SN4500 (4ATI) high-resolution, LED backlighted navigation displays. A more
