Banyan Air Service (Booth No. N4726) has announced the appointment of Craig Huston as chief operating officer for the FBO, which is located at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, in Florida.
Huston comes to Banyan with more than 18 years of leadership experience at large OEMs around the globe. He is responsible for overseeing all of Banyan’s operations, from FBO services to avionics repair, maintenance, parts and Banyan’s retail pilot shop.
Starting in 1998 with just three employees in a West Palm Beach, Fla., shop, Aerospace Technologies Group (Booth No. N1726) has grown into a major producer of window shade systems for commercial and corporate aviation. One of the key moments in the company’s growth came when it became the first supplier of OEM factory-installed electro-mechanical window shade systems for the Boeing 777 and Airbus A330/340 and A380.

Duncan Aviation recently uploaded time-lapse video of a unique paint project for a customer, as well as time-lapse video of its ongoing expansion project, which will add two 40,000-sq-ft maintenance hangars and 95,000 sq ft of shop and office space to its Lincoln, Neb. facility for a total addition of 175,000 sq ft.
Universal Avionics will be honoring two hardworking companies with its 2013 International Top Dealer and 2013 North American Top Dealer awards today at 3 p.m. at its NBAA booth (No. N6108).
The Top International Dealer award is going to Scandinavian Avionics for the second year in a row. The company’s work with Universal Avionics’s EFI-890R flight deck retrofits and Precision-Area Navigation (P-RNAV) upgrades were key to earning the award.
Advanced Aircrew Academy (Booth No. C8529) announced new course offerings here at NBAA 2013. Advanced will offer a new training module on Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) that is fully compliant with FAA guidance including AC 90-114.
Bill Snead, president of Wichita-based AOPA Insurance (Booth No. C10424)–a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association–put it most succinctly when he presented the company’s new options to members at NBAA 2013. “FBOs are our primary targets with our new commercial insurance offering. Beyond that, we are ready to insure corporate flight departments to a very high limit of liability,” he told AIN. “We know we can offer competitive rates, and that’s exciting.”
Russell Ford became CEO of StandardAero just before NBAA 2013 and he already has a firm grasp of the direction the independent provider of engine and airframe maintenance and other services needs to go. The Dubai Aerospace Enterprise-owned global company, with more than 3,800 employees and $1.6 billion in annual revenue, needs to continue to find new products and new solutions.
There is no question that the aviation industry needs to recruit its next generation of leaders. Miami Executive Aviation’s CEO Fabio Alexander (Booth No. N3116) is challenging the business aviation community to support the future by pledging $75,000 to support a flying classroom that Experience Aviation’s Barrington Irving is creating out of a Hawker 400XPR that Beechcraft donated to the nonprofit educational organization. Alexander hopes that his generous pledge inspires others to support the unique outreach.
Headset maker Lightspeed Aviation (Booth No. C11137) is offering a new aviation headset with a suite of options that offer a “personal flying experience” the company abbreviates as “PFX.” The options include “acoustic response mapping” and “streaming quiet.”
“Acoustic response mapping” uses sound waves and advanced signal processing to measure the user’s ear size and shape, adapting audio to each pilot’s “unique auditory landscape.”
FlightSafety Services Corporation (Booth No. N1921) has promoted Gen. Ron Ladnier (USAF, retired.) to vice president, replacing Mike Sangster, who retires from the position at the end of 2013.
In his new position Ladnier will oversee company finances, contracts, human resources and operations. He has been with FlightSafety since 2011 as director, Military Business Development, where he identified and provided training solutions.
Ladnier came to FlightSafety from the U.S. Air Force, where he reached the rank of Major General, and had extensive interagency experience.
Baldwin Aviation (Booth No. 1117) is revising its SAVVY safety management system (SMS) software to integrate it with new technology that allows clients to create custom documentation tailored to their unique environments and operations.
Baldwin’s new system can take electronic client inputs and customize every data point, even those that are unique to a specific client. The revised system also can include more parameters, including service issue tracking and cloud integration. Baldwin spend two years revising SAVVY and began integrated the new changes in January.
Duncan Aviation (Booth No. C8543) recently released an update to its “Straight Talk About FANS” e-book, providing operators with information on the Future Air Navigation System component of the FAA’s NextGen ATC modernization effort.
Aviation weather service provider WSI (Booth No. C7915) of Andover, Mass. is here at NBAA showcasing the latest updates to Pilotbrief Optima, its flight planning and real-time weather monitoring tool.
Heads Up Technologies (Booth No. 1421) has signed a content distribution agreement with Red Touch Media to provide access to an extensive library of digital content through Heads Up’s fiber-optic-based Lumin cabin management system and wireless media server.
BBA Aviation’s Ontic (Booth No. N3505) is growing. The company, which specializes in transitioning legacy parts manufacturing and distribution from OEMs to its own aftermarket production, has expanded both physically and through its range of products and services. At a ribbon-cutting ceremony September 25 it opened a new MRO facility in Singapore’s popular Seletar Aerospace Park, co-located with BBA Aviation’s Dallas Airmotive, which has established a Singapore Regional Turbine Center.
