Solar Impulse

The world debut of solar-powered Solar Impulse airplane could hardly have happened in less auspicious weather conditions.

First, it faced a battle against strong winds to get to Le Bourget from its most recent port of call in Brussels. And then, as of press time, heavy rain and shifting winds had prevented the solar-powered aircraft from making its planned flying display appearance here at the Paris Air Show.

Sukhoi SSJ100

Sukhoi Civil Aircraft and Alenia Aeronautica yesterday announced the launch of an executive version of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) regional jet. Dubbed the SBJ, or Sukhoi Business Jet, the project willwould fall under the responsibility of Italian support and marketing arm Superjet International, the joint venture between Alenia and Suhoi Holding.

Airbus A350XWB

Airbus has revealed that first deliveries of its A350XWB-800 and A350XWB-1000 will be delayed by two years–to mid-2016 and mid-2017, respectively. At a briefing in Paris on Saturday, it claimed the delay of the -1000 would allow it to boost the payload-range performance to better match the Boeing 777-300ER, which is something its customers have been asking for.

Eurocopter has delivered what it hopes will prove to be the X-Factor to this year’s Paris Air Show. The daily flying display this week features its new its X3 (“x cubed”) compound helicopter demonstrator, a modified AS 365 Dauphin with a conventional main rotor, two propellers on wingstubs and a conventional empennage.

On the opening day at the Paris Air Show, HyperMach took the wraps off a 20-seat, Mach 3.6 business jet that would fly from Paris to New York in just under two hours. Key enabling technologies for the SonicStar include the SonicBlue S-MAGJET five-stage electric-turbine hybrid supersonic 4000-X series engine and a magnetic spike on the nose that can control sonic booms using plasma waves.
