Bombardier Aerospace reached outside the company to appoint Pierre Gabriel Côté as president of Bombardier Business Aircraft, a position that has been held on an interim basis for the last 10 months by Pierre Beaudoin, president and COO of Bombardier Aerospace. In September, Beaudoin replaced Peter Edwards, who had been with the Canadian manufacturer for 10 years.

Raytheon's long and bumpy road toward type certification of the Hawker 4000 has taken another twist. Because of its already lengthy certification process–the FAA recently granted a seven-month extension, to December 31–the Hawker 4000 has to meet certain Part 25 amendments that went into effect in the seven months after the aircraft's May 31, 2001 type certification application date.

Eclipse Aviation has released the final performance numbers for the Eclipse 500, and it meets or exceeds all of the guarantees but one. Critics missed the mark that the very light jet couldn't meet its high-speed guarantee–Eclipse says the VLJ's top speed is 370 knots, well within the margins. And when it comes to useful load, the aircraft will deliver 2,400 pounds, some 200 pounds more than promised.

San Antonio-based Sino Swearingen hopes to deliver its first SJ30-2 before the end of this month, some nine months after receiving FAA certification for the $6.19 million light twinjet. The statement was made in conjunction with an announcement last Thursday that Sino Swearingen will build a $20 million, 220,000-sq-ft manufacturing and assembly building at San Antonio International Airport.

Special awareness training via an online course will be required for any pilot who flies VFR within 100 nm of the Washington, D.C. VOR, if the FAA adopts a proposed rule. The proposal, published yesterday, would apply regardless of the type of pilot certificate or where the flight originated. The course would have to be taken once within six months of the effective date of the rule.

The NTSB yesterday asked the FAA to attend immediately to what it deemed deficiencies in the cold-weather procedures of Saab 340 pilots and the airplanes’ performance in icing conditions. The recommendations came after a review of several icing episodes in Australia and the January 2 incident in which icing forced an American Eagle Saab 340BPlus into an uncontrolled descent for 5,000 feet over Southern California.

August 1 marks the deadline for PSA Airlines pilots to agree to US Airways’ conditions for placing 20 Bombardier CRJ900LRs with the wholly owned subsidiary over the course of a year, starting at the end of the first quarter of next year.
