Canada’s CMC Electronics, the former Canadian Marconi, reported it has completed a second set of flight trials of its enhanced vision system, which uses a small infrared camera to capture a real-world view outside and ahead of the airplane and overlay it on a HUD. Rick Beasley, CMCE director of business development, said the trials, which incorporated an updated infrared sensor and other product refinements in a small, lightweight package, were “very successful.” Test pilots conducted more than 30 approaches in weather that included quarter-mile visibility and a 300-ft ceiling, fog, rain, mist and haze, in both day and night operations. Certification of the system, designed to interface with some existing HUDs, is expected late next year.
