Bombardier Aerospace has selected Innovative Power Solutions to provide its brushless starter/generator (BS/G) system for the new Learjet 85. With growth potential to 625 amps, the 500-amp/18-kilowatt DC systems will be used on the 6,100-pound- thrust Pratt & Whitney Canada PW307 engines and auxiliary-power unit. The system has undergone engine-start tests at P&WC, during which it demonstrated “superior” performance under various environmental and input power conditions, according to the company. The BS/G system replaces traditional air turbine or other dedicated engine start systems with a unit which combines both start and power-generation functions, reducing complexity, maintenance requirements and weight, and thus contributing to claimed “significantly lower” life-cycle costs and enhanced aircraft operational capabilities.
