Honeywell Aerospace (Booth No. 1310) announced the selection of its LTS101-700D2 turboshaft to replace the existing engine in the Chinese Z-11 helicopter. New production engines will begin leaving the Honeywell Engines Phoenix plant for China in the first quarter of next year, said Doug Kult, director of helicopter and surface systems sales.
The Z-11, when powered by a single LTS101, will offer 7 percent more takeoff power with up to 10 percent lower specific fuel consumption and greater than 30 percent lower operating costs compared to the Chinese-built engine currently in the Z-11, he added. Changhe Aircraft Industries of Jingdezhen, China, builder of the multi-mission Z-11, predicts sales of more than 300 helicopters in the domestic Chinese market in the next five to 10 years.
The Z-11 order reintroduces LTS101 production at Honeywell. The engine has most recently been part of a program to replace the Turbomeca engine on the Eurocopter AS 350 B2. Kult said that availability of new production engines will also benefit Honeywell retrofit customers, especially with new accessories to further offset operation costs.
At Heli-Expo, Honeywell is also featuring improvements to the LTS101-800 series turboshaft for the Eurocopter BK 117 with 15 percent more takeoff power and 18 percent more hot-day power.
Honeywell’s newest turboshaft engine, the 1,000-shp-class HTS900 has received FAA type certification. The new engine design features a 5 to 10 percent lower fuel burn than previous engines in that class, Kult added.
