Bombardier Successfully Tests Non-temperature-restricted APU

Bombardier Aerospace recently completed a non-temperature-restricted bleedless auxiliary power unit starting test, following a 10-hour cold soak at -40 degrees F and using a starter/generation system and lithium-ion battery system. The Safran Microturbo e-APU system included a starter generator and power electronics from Thales and a Saft Li-ion battery system. The prototype equipment was designed for business jets, Bombardier said. The tests were conducted at the Safran Turbomeca cold-chamber facility in Pau, France. Key benefits include reduced fuel burn and emissions, lower weight, longer APU life and unrestricted operation at extremely low temperatures.


With a gadget like this, Bombardier has the potential to land new customers for its Challenger and Global product lines. Plus, should this gadget be successful in its business jet lineup, the company might consider putting it in its CRJ and C Series products. Should that happen, it might result in Bombardier landing more C Series orders than it thought, thus potentially ensuring that the C Series program will experience a solid financial cushion.
