On Tuesday at about 4:05 p.m. local time, the sole Spectrum 33 prototype crashed on the side of the runway while taking off from Spanish Fork Airport, Utah, on what was to be a routine test flight. Witnesses reported that the right wing hit the ground and the airplane cartwheeled, leaving a trail of debris before coming to rest in a pasture northwest of the airport.

Clearly seeing the value of an emergency vision assurance system, Jet Aviation of Teterboro, N.J., will purchase smoke displacement technology for installation in its company-owned fleet, and as an option for client aircraft. Jet Aviation will acq-uire the system from EVASWorldwide of Ramsey, N.J.
Safe Flight is celebrating its 60th year of producing products to make aviation safer. In 1944, Leonard Greene saw an airplane flown by a friend appear to simply fall out of the sky, killing the pilot and destroying the airplane. Greene, an engineer, started Safe Flight Instrument Corp. in 1946 to develop lift instrumentation that would warn a pilot of an approaching stall. Safe Flight (Booth No.
Canadian-based simulation training provider CAE (Booth No. 4525) announced here at NBAA that it has signed an agreement with Brazilian jet manufacturer Embraer to form a global training joint venture to provide pilot and ground crew training on the new Phenom 100 and 300 light jets.
The initial training program will be offered at CAE SimuFlite in Dallas beginning in 2008, when the Phenom 100 is expected to enter service.
The Internet is yielding important safety benefits for aviation, making critical information available to many more aviation participants and helping regulatory authorities disseminate safety material. The FAA has taken advantage of the Web and offers a mass of information online.
The NTSB today released the preliminary report for last Tuesday’s fatal crash of the Spectrum 33 prototype. According to the Safety Board, witnesses said the airplane entered a right roll almost immediately after takeoff from Spanish Fork Airport, Utah. The roll continued to about 90 degrees right wing down when the right wingtip hit the ground.
Airport managers have a tool for tracking the comings and goings of every aircraft that uses their airport. A system developed by TTI Wireless captures registration numbers of any aircraft that passes by the TTI camera.
On Monday, the FAA issued a proposed Airworthiness Directive that would mandate a one-time 80-manhour detailed inspection of the flight-control systems on Raytheon Beechcraft King Air C90A, B200, B200C, B300 and B300C turboprops. The proposed AD is the result of a report of "nonconformities" by an FAA Manufacturing Inspection District Office.
Raytheon Aircraft said it is working with the FAA, NTSB, Transport Canada and Pratt & Whitney Canada to determine the root cause of three Beechjet dual engine flameouts in less than two years (see "Third dual flameout raises questions about Beechjet," AINonline).
