The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) studied the market for very light jets and found that FAA and industry experts are not too worried about forecasted growing ranks of small jets. “Most experts GAO contacted believed that very light jets will likely have little impact on safety due to FAA’s certification procedures for aircraft, pilots and maintenance,” the agency noted. The GAO report did not issue recommendations but rather studied VLJ market forecasts and delivery factors; the VLJ effect on the national airspace system; how the FAA will handle VLJs as they enter service; and how VLJs will affect FAA costs and Airport and Airway Trust Fund revenues. The GAO concluded that it is too early to tell whether VLJs will affect trust fund revenues “because the air-taxi model has yet to prove itself” and added that the FAA believes VLJ air taxis won’t take passengers from airlines in observable numbers for at least 10 years.
