Embraer announced that the V2500 commercial turbofan produced by the International Aero Engines (IAE) consortium will power its twin-engine KC-390 tanker/transport now in development. IAE president and CEO Ian Aitken said the choice “substantially opens a market [in which] we have not done business  before.” The V2500-E5 engine was competing against the CFM56 for the Embraer KC-390 application.

Since its creation in 1983, IAE has delivered more than 4,500 V2500s to power MD-90s and the Airbus A320 series. Another 2,000 engines are on order, as customers for the Airbus single-aisle series continue to endorse the improvements in design efficiency that IAE has introduced. Aitken suggested that the KC-390 will gain a competitive edge due to engine commonality with the commercial V2500 variants, including “critical upgrades, product enhancements and process improvements.”

IAE said consortium members Pratt &Whitney, Rolls-Royce, Japan Aero Engine and MTU have already started engineering work on the V2500-E5 version for the KC-390. Deliveries are due in 2013 for the prototype aircraft, which is scheduled to fly the following year, with production engines to follow in 2015.

An IAE spokesman told AIN that the -E5 version is rated at 29,000 pounds of thrust and features new software with new thrust tables and communication protocols. But there are no planned changes to the V2500’s turbomachinery or nacelle and thrust reverser, and the existing gearbox meets the KC-390 power offtake requirement, he added.

Embraer also announced that BAE Systems Platform Solutions will provide flight control computers and actuator control electronics for the fly-by-wire KC-390. Goodrich will provide the electro-hydrostatic actuators, actuator electronics and electrical controls.
