The Stratus ADS-B receiver is finally capable of providing traffic information, and the new Stratus 2 receiver adds an attitude and heading reference system (AHRS).
Developed in a partnership among ForeFlight, Appareo Systems and Sporty’s Pilot Shop, the original $799 Stratus receiver, now dubbed Stratus 1, will now display ADS-R and TIS-B traffic on the ForeFlight Mobile iPad app (with the late April release of ForeFlight version 5.1).
In addition to the current free ADS-B weather provided by Stratus 1, the new $899 Stratus 2 adds air-to-air traffic on both ADS-B frequencies (978 and 1090 MHz). Both units include Waas GPS receivers. The AHRS in the Stratus 2 will be available for synthetic vision displays this month. According to ForeFlight, “[The] traffic system supports mixed-mode traffic display of both directional and nondirectional targets. TrafficTrend technology shows the predicted path of traffic, and trend information is dynamically modified as updated target information is received.”
