Mac Dan Aviation, one of two FBOs at Essex County Airport in northern New Jersey, closed its doors last Wednesday, according to a security guard tending the now-empty facility. The company apparently had stopped providing fuel services earlier last month and sold all of its equipment, according to information provided to AIN. Mac Dan operated the FBO, as well as an aircraft sales division, charter operation and flight school. The airport’s remaining FBO, one of three facilities operated by fractional-share provider Avantair, has added more personnel to help serve former Mac Dan customers. Avantair Elite Services also plans to add more fuel trucks to handle the new business, said Avantair systems FBO manager Mike Hushek. “Business is tough right now,” he said. Asked about the airport’s plans for the former Mac Dan facilities, airport manager Tom Gomez said that he was not able to comment. Avantair might be interested in some of the Mac Dan hangars, Hushek said. “We’ve got to find out what the airport wants to do with the facility. Caldwell is a hidden treasure.”
