UTC’s PZL Mielec To Make Eclipse 550 Airframes
Eclipse Aerospace is outsourcing manufacturing of airframe structural components for the new Eclipse 550 very light jet to PZL Mielec, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. UTC is the parent company of Sikorsky, which is a minority owner of Eclipse.
United Technologies purchased PZL–Polskie Zakłady Lotnicze or Polish Aviation Works–based in Mielec, Poland in March 2007. In February 2011, Sikorsky announced that it had completed a minority equity investment (less than $25 million) in Eclipse Aerospace and signed an agreement to provide “global supply chain support and certain production restart services, which will aid Eclipse Aerospace in its efforts to reintroduce production of the Eclipse 500.”
PZL will manufacture the fuselage, empennage and wings for the new Eclipse 550 and ship them to Eclipse headquarters in Albuquerque, N.M., for assembly. The 550 uses the same PW610F engines, supplied by UTC subsidiary Pratt & Whitney Canada, and airframe as the 500, but will add autothrottles and enhanced and synthetic vision systems to the Innovative Solutions & Support Avio IFMS avionics suite. Eclipse expects to begin production of the Model 550 next year.
