The FAA issued a Supplemental Type Certificate to Clifford Development for modification of Cessna Citation 550s and S550s with Williams International FJ44-3A engines. Four Clifford installation centers will do the modifications: Great Lakes Aviation of Kalamazoo, Mich.; Threshold Aviation of Chino, Calif.; Central Flying Service of Little Rock, Ark.; and Stevens Aviation of Greenville, S.C. The modification lowers empty weight by 250 pounds and includes the new engines (3,000 pounds thrust flat-rated to 2,820 versus the original P&WC JT15D’s 2,500 pounds), Ametek digital engine display, heavy-duty Goodrich brakes and dual-Fadec engine controls. Performance improvements include less than 27 minutes time-to-climb to 43,000 feet compared with a one-hour, 30-minute step climb for the original model; more than 50-percent increase in NBAA IFR range with four passengers; and more than 15-percent increase in maximum cruise speed. Price of the conversion is $2.295 million for the 550 and $2.395 million for the S550 with winglets. The price includes all labor, installation and materials as well as engine core credit.
