SAIB Issued for Garmin CDI/HSI Scaling Issue

The FAA issued Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) CE-11-16 to highlight an issue identified by Garmin that could affect aircraft flying certain instrument approaches. According to the SAIB, during a limited number of Lnav/Vnav and Lnav+V approaches, ≥full-scale deflection on the CDI/HSI will result in the aircraft flying outside allowed lateral limits for the approach.≤ The SAIB added, ≥Assuming the aircraft continues on approach and does not deviate any further laterally, it will remain protected from any terrain or obstacles.≤ This issue affects Garmin integrated flight decks, including the G1000-based Cirrus Perspective and Embraer Prodigy systems as well as the G900X/G950, GNS 400W/500W and Waas-enabled GNS 480/CNX80 units. Certain conditions must be met for this problem to occur, namely the system labels the approach L/Vnav or Lnav+V and the distance between the final approach fix and the missed approach point is greater than seven miles. Garmin has issued Service Advisory No. 1047, Rev A and Installation Bulletin No. 1048, Rev A ≥to instruct users to check the database cycles for their equipment for removal of the affected approaches until the issue is addressed in a future software release,≤ according to the SAIB.
