The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on July 24 lifted the prohibition on U.S. flights to and from Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport it imposed earlier this week due to the fighting in Gaza. The agency said it cancelled a notice to airmen (Notam) it had earlier renewed, with the cancellation becoming effective at 11:45 EDT.

An ATR 72-500 operated by Taiwan’s TransAsia Airways crashed on its second attempt at landing during a thunderstorm in Magong, Taiwan, killing 48 of the 58 passengers and crewmembers on board. The 70-seat turboprop, operating as Flight GE222, took off from the city of Kaohsiung on a scheduled flight to Magong. According to ATR, the accident happened around 7:30 p.m.

Malaysian Airlines has confirmed that one of its Boeing 777s has crashed in eastern Ukraine, about 31 miles from the border with Russia. Flight MH17 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with 280 passengers and 15 crew on board. According to Ukrainian air traffic controllers, they lost contact with the aircraft at around 14.15 UTC almost 20 miles from the waypoint at Tamak.
