Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Airbus have taken advantage of the A380 very large airliner’s presence here to introduce the operator’s senior personnel and flightcrew to the behemoth. Australia is mulling the acquisition of four Boeing C-17s, but will probably have to make its mind up by the end of June. Unless the U.S. Congress modifies the Pentagon’s fiscal 2007 budget by funding additional production for the U.S. Air Force beyond the 180 already purchased, the C-17 line will close in April 2008.

Sichuan Snecma Aero-engine Maintenance Co. (SSAMC), a joint venture between Snecma Services, Air China and Willis Lease Finance Corp., has signed an exclusive 20-year maintenance, repair and overhaul agreement to service CFM56-5B and -7B engines powering Air China’s growing fleet of 160 aircraft.

Emirates Airline plans to be one of the major international carriers for the 2008 Beijing Olympic games and the Shanghai World Expo two years later. But these two events are not the only reasons for expansion into China. The People’s Republic is one of the United Arab Emirates’ biggest trading partners and the airline has long targeted growth in routes and frequencies to Chinese cities.

But Australian prime minister John Howard’s apparent sensitivity to the flagcarrier’s concerns about government subsidies has no doubt buoyed spirits as it engages in a war of words with Emirates Airline over that Dubai-based carrier’s designs on more access to Australia.

Aviation International News traveled from Delhi to Mumbai for the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) conference on Kingfisher Airlines, because at the time it offered the best schedule and most user-friendly Web site for buying tickets in U.S. dollars using a credit card. We paid $310 (or about INR 12,500) for the round-trip ticket.
