GE Aviation has announced here at the show that it is to provide the data link for Lockheed Martin’s Block 8.1 upgrade for the C-130J Hercules. Lockheed Martin was awarded a $167 million upgrade contract by the U.S. Air Force in December, and has selected GE Aviation (Hall 4 Stand B7) to provide the advanced communication, navigation and air traffic management data link.
ITT Exelis has created a web-based operations management application suite for airlines and airports based on the surveillance data it collects as provider of the automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) radio network in the U.S.
Texas ranchers are making a few extra dollars while ridding their property of destructive feral hogs. A new Texas law allows them to sell permits to sportsmen who pay $300 an hour and up to fly and shoot. More than 1,700 “Aerial Wildlife Management Permits” have been issued since the law passed last September.

The Eastern Region Helicopter Council (ERHC) has issued a new statement critical of an anticipated mandatory North Shore Route off the shore of Long Island, N.Y. The group said the route would “exacerbate air traffic congestion and make helicopter noise permanent over some communities.”
A planned joint venture by Iridium Communications and Nav Canada promises to offerworldwide ADS-B-based air traffic surveillance services using the upcoming Iridium Next satellite network. Iridium said last year that it was considering adding an ADS-B payload to its Iridium Next satellites, which begin launching in 2015 and will be completed in 2017.

There are two reasons: one political and the other practical. Politically, GPS has become a (not the) dominant technology in almost every part of human life around the world, in government, national security, industry and private life, with more than a billion receivers being used daily for thousands of applications, from simple to critical.
