Frank Lanza, 74, cofounder, chairman and CEO of L-3 Communications, died suddenly on June 6. During his career, Lanza was v-p of Textron’s Dalmo Victor; president of Loral Electronic Systems; president and COO of Loral; executive v-p of Lockheed Martin; and president and COO of Lockheed’s C3I and Systems Integration sector. Lanza helped build Loral into a leading defense firm. He cofounded L-3 in 1997. A Korean War Coast Guard veteran, Lanza was a board member for the Coast Guard Foundation and the American Italian Cancer Foundation. Lanza and his wife were involved in numerous charitable activities through their family foundation.
Michael Dornheim, 51, senior engineering editor for Aviation Week & Space Technology, died in a car crash on June 3 in California. Dornheim, who wrote for the magazine for 22 years, covered the secret aerospace industry and wrote extensively about aeronautics, propulsion, avionics, systems engineering and safety, among other topics. He is survived by a brother and his parents.
