Gordon Newstrom, founder of Mesaba Aviation, died in December. He was 93. An expert floatplane pilot, Newstrom in 1944 founded Mesaba Aviation, the predecessor to Mesaba Airlines.

Lewis Hanson, an Air Force One pilot for four presidents, died on December 27. He was 81. Hanson, a retired Air Force colonel, flew as a pilot or backup pilot on every trip during President John F. Kennedy’s presidency. He served as copilot on the flight that flew Kennedy’s body from Dallas to Washington. Hanson also served as pilot for Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson and Harry Truman.
