Watch for the NTSB soon to release recommendations intended to improve the safety of EMS helicopter operations. A spokesman for the Safety Board declined to comment on the specific recommendations but did confirm that the agency is “looking at helicopter EMS operations and is working on recommendations.” The recommendations follow a Safety Board analysis of more than 40 accidents involving EMS helicopters and are expected to call for use of night-vision goggles, installation of enhanced terrain awareness warning systems and implementation of more stringent regulations governing reduced-visibility operations.
