The Dallas Executive Airport (RBD) has been selected as the 2004 Reliever Airport of the Year by the Texas Department of Transportation. The award was presented at the 22nd annual Texas aviation conference held recently in the state capital, Austin. Dallas Executive, formerly known as Redbird, is a 1,000-acre facility about 10 miles (18 minutes’ drive time, according to MapQuest) south of downtown Dallas. The airport is owned and operated by the city. Since 1998, more than $8 million in private funds have been committed to developing the airport. More than half that amount has already gone toward a new terminal building and control tower. Pavement, fencing, signage and lighting are also on the list of planned upgrades. There are currently three FBOs at RBD: Cutter Aviation; Dallas Aircraft Services; and The Jet Center-Dallas.
