Public comments released last month on an FAR Part 161 noise study at Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport (BUR) support a nighttime curfew (10 p.m. to 7 a.m.) on all aircraft operations except certain emergencies, military flights and those delayed for reasons beyond the control of the operator. The study recorded 1,699 separate comments received from a variety of sources, including statements at 13 public meetings held through May 9 and written comments left at the meetings or received by mail or e-mail. Of the comments received, 431 (25 percent) supported the curfew and 152 (9 percent) were opposed. A further 212 comments supported alternatives to the curfew, a subject that will be explored in the Part 161 study’s second phase. An additional 82 comments related to flight paths, and 133 were filed on noise issues in general. The report broke down the comments into 14 separate broad categories. The stated goal of the study is “to eliminate or significantly reduce nighttime flight noise at Burbank Airport now and in the future.”
