The FAA has awarded Jeppesen the industry’s first letter of acceptance for airport moving-map data under  standards outlined in Advisory Circular AC 20-153. The award is intended to validate the quality standards and data capture, maintenance and distribution processes used by electronic surface map providers. Jeppesen’s airport map data is used in a variety of panel-mount and electronic flight bag avionics applications. It provides a detailed database of thousands of airports that dynamically renders maps of runways and taxiways and shows pilots their “own ship” position on the surface. “The result is improved positional awareness among flight crews, which is a critical safety factor for reducing runway incursions during ground operations at busy commercial airports with complex runway and taxiway layouts,” Jeppesen said.
