The FAA has approved plans by Georgia’s Gwinnett County to privatize Gwinnett County-Briscoe Field in Lawrenceville, Ga. The tower-controlled airport has a 6,000-foot runway and is located 31 nm northeast of Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. Two FBOs serve the airport, Aircraft Specialists Jet Center and Landmark Aviation. The county is hoping to attract a company to buy or lease and improve the airport to attract new businesses and a scheduled airline. According to Steve Lemelin, general manager of Gwinnett-based charter operator Georgia Jet, “Thus far we know of at least two firms that are interested in the process. The county now will begin formal studies to determine if privatization is in the best interests of Gwinnett residents. The latest unofficial poll shows the vast majority of the county’s population is in favor of the project.”
