CMC Electronics (Hall 4 Stand C16a) signed a contract to supply its latest flight management system, the CMA-9000, for the Thales cockpit in the Russian Regional Jet. Designed to carry between 63 and 98 passengers (depending on the version), the RRJ is under development at Sukhoi. The cockpit is said to be similar to that of the Airbus A380, which will be delivered with an FMS from Honeywell.

AirCell is moving forward with plans for a nationwide network of about 200 special ground stations to support in-flight broadband services. The Louisville, Colo. company is paying $31.319 million for a frequency-spectrum license after beating out Verizon Airfone and others in an FCC auction that concluded on June 5.

Sagem Défense Sécurité will supply avionics for the 322 UH-145 helicopters (plus 30 options) selected by the U.S. Army on June 30. Subsidiary Sagem Avionics will handle equipment integration, final assembly and product support from its facility in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Boeing and FedEx have launched an in-service evaluation of active radio frequency identification (RFID) tags on some airplane parts for a MD-10 freighter. Tests will also identify potential electromagnetic interference.

The FAA is proposing to decommission all 54 direction finders (DF) and associated DF approaches in all states other than Alaska. “DFs have been used sparingly over the last nine years and the equipment is beyond its useful life cycle,” the agency said.

Rockwell Collins announced delivery of the Boeing 787’s core network cabinet, the first in a long line of components Collins is supplying for the program. The cabinet plays a key role in Boeing’s idea for an “e-enabled” airplane.

The next flight you take could be much smoother, thanks to a new airborne weather radar design from U.S. avionics maker Rockwell Collins.
The Multi Hazard Detection weather radar includes a number of advanced features that the manufacturer said are intended to warn flight crews of potential areas of turbulence and provide extra information about developing storms.

Special awareness training via an online course will be required for any pilot who flies VFR within 100 nm of the Washington, D.C. VOR, if the FAA adopts a proposed rule. The proposal, published yesterday, would apply regardless of the type of pilot certificate or where the flight originated. The course would have to be taken once within six months of the effective date of the rule.

British charter airline MyTravel is using an electronic technical log (ETL) to manage its aircraft fleet data, including maintenance requirements and trip reports. This is another step in the goal to achieving a truly paperless cockpit, according to Data Systems & Solutions (DS&S), UK-based developer of the CoreWing ETL.
