Thales announced yesterday that the Gulfstream Aerospace advanced flight controls (AFC) proof-of-concept research program has achieved a successful first flight with Thales fly-by-wire technology aboard a modified Gulfstream V. The event represents a milestone in a flight test series which began September 26 with a mission on which the GV’s hydromechanical spoiler components were replaced with electromechanical actuators.

Thales’ Integrated Electronic Standby Instrument (IESI) will join the array in the Next Generation Pilatus PC-12, as announced yesterday at the Thales booth here at NBAA’06. Thales Aerospace (Booth No. 3616), with offices in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, and West Sussex, UK, will supply the all-in-one standby unit to augment aircraft attitude, airspeed and altitude functions in the turbine-powered business aircraft.

Sagem Avionics and General Dynamics Aviation Services are partnering on a glass-panel cockpit upgrade for Part 25 jets including the Challenger 600 and 601, Falcon 20 and 50, Gulfstream II and III, and Hawker 700 and 800. The upgrade comprises five 10.4-inch-diagonal displays, which include a PFD and MFD in front of each pilot with an EICAS display in the center.

Innovative Solutions & Support (IS&S) now offers the capability of class 3 electronic flight bag data along with its glass cockpit upgrades, such as last month’s STC for the 10-inch and 15-inch cockpit/IP flat-panel display system in the Pilatus PC-12.

IS&S is demonstrating the EFB’s full-color operation at Booth No. 1253.

Starling Communications’ MiniMiJet Ku-band low-profile top- mounted satcom antenna on display at Booth No. 1279 uses a patent-pending coherent multi-panel antenna geometry to achieve the gain of a larger conventional shape with a small (16-inch) footprint. The steerable stabilized array has a nominal transmission rate of up to 384 kbps and reception between 3 and 5 mbps.

When Flight Display Systems was launched in 1999, it was with a moving map. Now, after eight years of an annual average growth rate of about 90 percent and some 4,400 new products later, the Alpharetta, Ga. company is no longer knocking at the door, they’re about to kick it in.
