Greenwich AeroGroup and its affiliates have agreed to sell, support and install the Iridium OpenPort-Aero broadband aviation communications platform on business aviation aircraft, including helicopters. It expects installations to begin in the third quarter of 2012.

Jet Aviation has received a European supplemental type certificate (STC) to install Aircell’s Aviator 200 system on the Dassault Falcon 2000LX jet. The Aviator 200 enables near-global email and voice capabilities via Inmarsat’s satellite-based SwiftBroadband service powered by Thrane & Thrane. A complete package costs $60,000, including installation.
Embraer Executive Jets yesterday announced that it has sold and delivered a Legacy 650 to Saudi Arabia-based FAL Aviation–the first Legacy 650 registered in the Kingdom. A subsidiary of the Fal Group in Riyadh, Fal Aviation was among the first operators of the Legacy 600 when it was introduced in 2003.
When asked, “Why an app, and why now?” James Hardie, Arinc Direct’s director for the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions, responded, “Once we realized that more than 50 percent of our subscriber base was already using the [Apple] iPad as an electronic flight bag in the cockpit, we knew that we could provide more up-to-date information, automatically, through our own app, whenever it is connected via the Internet to our servers.”
Idair (Stand 783), the joint venture between Lufthansa Technik and Panasonic Avionics, is debuting Eclipsair, its wireless “infotainment” system, here at EBACE. Aimed at the VIP and business jet markets, Eclipsair delivers news, video, audio data and flight information. The company anticipates it will be available for customer installations in the second quarter of 2013.
Michimasa Fujino, president and CEO of Honda Aircraft Co., announced recent certification milestones for the company’s HondaJet yesterday at EBACE, while unveiling new enhancements for the VLJ’s avionics and cabin management system (CMS).
Universal Aviation has opened an FBO at Venice’s Marco Polo Airport. The 24/7 facility offers ground handling, fuel and trip-support services, as well as concierge and customs, immigration and quarantine. The Venice base augments the company’s three other Italian bases at Rome Ciampino Airport and Milan’s Malpensa and Linate airports.
FlightAware (Stand 2065), the U.S.-based flight tracking company, is introducing two new web-based products this week in its debut appearance at the EBACE show. FlightAware Global is aimed at aircraft operators, while FBO ToolBox Europe is designed for FBOs and handlers.
Honeywell and Inmarsat have completed an exclusive agreement for Honeywell to develop onboard hardware to connect to Inmarsat’s Global Xpress high-speed satcom system. The Global Express agreement, said Carl Esposito, Honeywell Aerospace vice president of marketing and product management, “validates the strategy of [last year’s EMS Technologies] acquisition and the focus of global connectivity.”
For U.S. airplane owners and operators the simple four-letter acronym RVSM (for reduced vertical separation minimums, the process for reducing to 1,000 feet the separation between airplanes flying above 29,000 feet) signals the beginning of an onerous process to get formal permission from the FAA to fly in what has become an ordinary fashion.
