Appareo Systems, a small technology company from Fargo, N.D., announced yesterday it has partnered with Gulf Coast giant Air Logistics, a Bristow Group company, to produce an interesing flight monitoring tool called Aircraft Logging and Event Recording for Training and Safety (Alerts).

One of two Fairfax County (Va.) Police Department Bell 407s modified by Paradigm Aerospace is on display at the L-3 Communications booth (No. 2847). Chief pilot Paul Schaaf and pilot Mike Mountjoy flew the 407 from Fairfax to Heli-Expo on Saturday, which gave them an opportunity to test all the equipment installed by Paradigm.

Last week’s stock market tumble put a chokehold on Inmarsat’s Swift64 satellite ISDN service as business jet passengers, particularly those on the U.S. East Coast, scrambled for their laptops and, perhaps predictably, brought the network to a grinding halt. As demand for the service continues to skyrocket, Swift64 is having trouble handling data traffic in the U.S. and Europe at peak times, especially on weekday afternoons.

Eclipse Aviation and Aspen Avionics last month settled a patent dispute over the AT300 hazard awareness display. Under the settlement agreement, Eclipse dropped a competing patent claim in exchange for 1 percent of Aspen common stock. The VLJ maker had contended that Aspen cofounders Peter Lyons and Jeff Bethel developed the AT300 product while they worked at Eclipse and, therefore, the patent for the product should belong to Eclipse.

The Bell 429, a new light twin helicopter derived from the Bell 427i, will be dramatically unveiled at an 11:30 a.m. press event today at Bell Helicopter’s booth, No. 1087 in Hall D. Bell announced the 427i, an IFR-capable version of the 427, less than one year ago at Heli-Expo 2004.

The FAA has withdrawn its decade-old proposal to rescind its requirement for Mode-S transponders and, consequently, plans to end the hundreds of Mode-S installation exemptions currently in effect. Beginning March 1, 2007, the FAA has proposed that it will no longer allow exempted Part 121 and 135 operators to fly without a Mode-S transponder.
