GE Aviation’s Flight Efficiency Services division is using big data techniques to help airlines to improve their profit margins with a particular focus on reducing fuel burn. “Fuel accounts for 40 percent of airline costs with around $215 billion spent on this each year,” said general manager Giovanni Spitale. “GE thinks that if machines can talk to each other using the industrial internet [a term coined by GE] we can make better sense of that [fuel consumption].”

Melbourne, Florida-based Extant Components Group has acquired the AIM line of standby instruments from L-3 Communications Avionics Systems, Extant announced last week. Although it did not reveal the terms of the deal, Extant said it plans to make the AIM product line part of its Symetrics Industries subsidiary, from where it will perform all future manufacturing, repair and customer service and supply spares and related technical support activities.
Aircraft Performance Group has extended the functionality of its iPreFlight app for the iPad by integrating a flight planning module from Air Support. The revised app is available for preview in its Beta version at the APG booth (6423).
Previous versions of iPreFlight provided runway analysis and weight/balance calculations without the need for an Internet connection. Adding a module using the Air Support PPS flight planning tool allows iPreFlight to be used as a “one-stop” for pre-flight planning purposes.

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia-based consultancy firm MAZ Aviation and satellite airtime provider Satcom1 (Booth 821) are joining forces to design a new, faster satcom system for the Airbus ACJ and Boeing BBJ. According to the partnership agreement, the system will be based on Ka- and Ku- band solutions and will offer greater bandwidth for airborne communications. Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband and its safety services features will be used for cockpit communications needs.
The recent tragedy of the still-missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 has brought the tracking of aircraft sharply into focus, and at a conference last week in Montreal ICAO forged a consensus to develop aircraft tracking as matter of priority. While this is a welcome move, the ability to transmit more than just positional data is critical in allowing ground experts to not only determine the causes of losses, but also to give aircrew a better chance of averting a loss.

Lighting manufacturer Luma Technologies (Booth 3018) announced progress on several fronts at EBACE 2014. The Bellevue, Washington-based company focuses on design and manufacture of lighted products using LED and other solid-state technologies. These include caution-warning systems and display panels, switches, annunciators, integrated gear levers and other electro-mechanical controls.
