Boeing selected the Bombardier Challenger 605 to be the platform for its maritime surveillance aircraft (MSA) offering. This program was announced last year as a less expensive alternative to Boeing’s high-spec P-8 Poseidon maritime patroller. The MSA mission suite draws heavily on the technology developed for the P-8, albeit sized for a business jet. Field Aviation in Canada is currently modifying a Boeing-owned Challenger 604 to act as an MSA demonstrator, which should appear next year. Field will also undertake the production modifications of the Challenger 605.

Dassault Aviation (Stand 1445), which is here exhibiting its Falcon 7X and Falcon 900LX business jets, expects the Middle East to be a major market for its new Falcon 5X, which was revealed at last month’s NBAA show in Las Vegas. The Saint-Cloud, France-based manufacturer has just begun offering a cockpit upgrade retrofit for the Falcon 900C/EX and an improvement for the Falcon 7X’s electronic flight bag (EFB).
The super-midsize Gulfstream G280 on display here this week in Dubai broke a city-pair speed record en route to the airshow, bringing the aircraft’s records total to more than 30. Its record run started at 5:23 p.m. on Friday, when the jet departed from Kuala Lumpur International Airport with Gulfstream pilots Jason Willis and Marilyn Whicker at the controls. The twinjet flew the 3,356-nm (6,215-km) flight to Al Maktoum International Airport in 7 hours 34 minutes, averaging Mach 0.80.
The Bombardier Learjet 75 light jet–a longer-range version of the Learjet 45 with Garmin G5000 integrated avionics, redesigned winglets and more efficient Honeywell TFE731-40BR engines–received U.S. FAA certification on Thursday. Deliveries have already begun for U.S. and Canadian customers, a Bombardier Aerospace spokeswoman told AIN. Certification and delivery efforts are pending for its smaller sibling, the Learjet 70.
Nextant Aerospace (Chalet B17) has big expectations for the Indian market for its 400XTi light jet and C90XT twin turboprop, which are respectively remanufactured Beechjet 400A/400XPs and King Air C90s. In fact, India has the largest entry-level jet fleet in Asia–17 percent of the $1.7 billion market–while deliveries in this segment have doubled over the past five years.
Abu Dhabi-based Falcon Aviation Services inked a letter of intent (LOI) for the Pilatus PC-24 business jet yesterday afternoon here at Dubai 2013. The new jet was launched in May at the European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (EBACE) in Geneva. While Pilatus said it will not open the PC-24’s order book until EBACE 2014, this is the first reported LOI for the new aircraft, potentially placing the UAE aircraft and charter management firm as one of the launch customers when orders are officially taken.
Airbus is highlighting two corporate jets, an ACJ318 and an ACJ319, in this year’s Dubai Airshow static display. Constellation Aviation Services operates the Airbus ACJ318, which features lounge areas at the front, plus a private office/bedroom with en-suite bathroom at the rear. Emirates Executive began offering VVIP charters earlier this year with the Airbus ACJ319, featuring private suites, lounge areas and a bathroom with a shower.
Buoyed by the recent 50-aircraft order to remanufacture the Hawker 400XP fleet of Travel Management Company and fresh from the launch of a new aircraft remanufacturing program, Nextant Aerospace (Chalet B17) has brought its 400XTi light business jet to Dubai to make its airshow debut in the Middle East.
The company’s XPR program provides performance upgrades for Hawker 400 and 800 series jets, with options for new avionics and upgraded engines. Purchase of an already upgraded Hawker 400XPR or 800XPR, at around half the price of a similar new aircraft, is another option for cost-conscious buyers.
While the business aviation world cautiously waits to see if the signs of recovery in the traditional markets of Europe and North America bear fruit, the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are looking elsewhere to satisfy demand for growth. While the Far East and Latin America offer encouragement, it is Africa that offers the best opportunities for increased sales, but the continent also has its own unique set of challenges.
