The CEOs of Honda Motor and GE Transportation, a division of General Electric, signed the definitive agreement during the NBAA Convention last month to create GE Honda Aero Engines, a joint company that will pursue the launch of Honda’s HF118 turbofan engine for the light business jet market.

French engine manufacturer Snecma recently started ground tests of the core engine demonstrator for its Silvercrest business aircraft turbofan. The $100 million core demonstration effort at the company’s Villaroche facilities near Paris is expected to pave the way for full-scale development. The 9,500- to 12,000-pound-thrust engine is targeted mainly at super-midsize to large business jets.

BBA Group, parent company of Signature Flight Support FBOs and the Dallas Airmotive maintenance center, has acquired Barrett Turbine Engine Company. Barrett specializes in the repair and overhaul of turbine-engine components, particularly for the Honeywell TFE731 series. No changes in the management or location of the Augusta, Ga., company are planned, said BBA Aviation officials.

Williams International launched the 3,500-pound-thrust FJ44-4, a FADEC-equipped turbofan engine that uses essentially the same core as the 3,000-pound-thrust FJ44-3. Detailed performance parameters are being kept under tight wraps until an application for the new engine is announced. A spokesman for Williams International, based in Walled Lake, Mich., said at the show the company is just now beginning to market the engine to potential OEMs.

Russell Turner, a former top executive for Boeing’s United Space Alliance business in Houston, is the new president of Honeywell Aerospace’s $4.7 billion Engines, Systems and Services division. He assumed his duties at Honeywell on June 1, taking over from interim president Mike Redenbaugh, who returns to his previous job at the Phoenix company’s propulsion systems business.

Safire Aircraft selected the Williams FJ33, derated to 1,100 pounds thrust, to power the Florida company’s S-26 very light twinjet. Safire disclosed last August it was seeking an alternate supplier to its first choice, Agilis Engines, which has never manufactured an engine of its own design but over the past several years has been a supplier of engineering services to OEMs.
