According to the NTSB, the Mitsubishi MU-2 that crashed September 22 while attempting to return to its departure airport had originally departed and returned to the same airport about 90 minutes earlier because of a right-engine fire warning caution light. Night IMC prevailed on the accident flight. About 30 minutes after taking off from West Memphis Municipal Airport (AWM), Ark., to pick up cargo at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport (GVL), Ga., the pilot of MU-2 N103RC told ATC he needed to return to AWM again because he had to have something “checked out.” The turboprop twin, approaching from the east, circled AWM in a descending left turn before flying a course that paralleled Runway 35 about 0.8 nm to the right. The airplane continued its descent and crossed Interstate 40 before turning northwest. The 47-year-old pilot was killed when the airplane crashed into an unoccupied heavy construction vehicle in a field about 2.8 nm from AWM on a heading of 350 degrees.
