Eclipse Aviation selected radar manufacturer Japan Radio to provide a new weather radar that will come standard in the Eclipse 500 very light jet. The original Honeywell radar will be an extra-cost option, but the Japan Radio radar will not be retrofittable to Eclipse 500s already equipped with the Honeywell radars, according to Vern Raburn, Eclipse president and CEO. Japan Radio has been manufacturing radar for marine and military applications since World War II. At EAA AirVenture, Raburn also revealed that Eclipse is committing to the 1090 ADS-B datalink standard. “We’re not going to support UAT [Universal Access Transceiver],” he said. “It’s stone dead.” Effective September 1, Eclipse will raise the base price of the 500 by $75,000, to $1.595 million in June 2006 dollars, due to increases in vendor and supplier costs. Finally, the airplane’s new pitot/AOA probe has been FAA certified and a service bulletin that eliminates the VFR-only AD on the Eclipse 500 is available. The entire fleet should receive the new probes by the end of August, at which time Eclipse expects to be delivering one airplane per day.
