After nearly 30 years with the FAA, associate administrator for aviation safety Nick Sabatini will retire effective January 3, the agency announced today. In the post, Sabatini has overseen regulation and certification matters at the agency. He will be replaced by Peggy Gilligan, deputy associate administrator for aviation safety. Also retiring effective January 3 is Ruth Leverenz, who most recently has served as acting deputy administrator of the agency. No replacement has yet been named to take over Leverenz’s position. Sabatini has been associate administrator for aviation safety since June 2001, and before that he served as assistant manager and manager of the Eastern Region’s Flight Standards Division. Leverenz has 38 years of federal experience, the last 24 with the FAA. She has served as director of the FAA Office of Budget, the agency’s CFO, assistant administrator for regions and center operations and regional administrator in the Southwest. She has been acting deputy administrator since September 2007.
