The Aeronautical Repair Station Association (Arsa) has issued a new report that provides a comprehensive economic review of the maintenance, repair and overhaul marketplace. The report, entitled “Global MRO Market Economic Assessment,” estimates the 2012 civil aviation market at more than $65 billion.
Engine overhaul accounts for the largest segment, at $26.1 billion, followed by component overhaul at $16.8 billion. Heavy airframe maintenance accounts for $13 billion; more than 70 percent is provided to air transport aircraft, with 38 percent performed on aircraft based in North America. Of the $26.1 billion spent on engine overhaul, more than 86 percent is provided to air transport aircraft, with 36 percent performed on aircraft based in North America. Line maintenance accounts for $9.9 billion, with almost 30 percent of it being spent on North American-based aircraft.
According to the report, every dollar spent on heavy airframe maintenance generates $1.39 of economic activity, while one dollar spent on engine overhaul and component maintenance generates $1.88 and $1.68 of economic activity, respectively. Line maintenance generates $1.19 of economic activity for every dollar spent.
