Gulfstream Aerospace’s enhanced vision system (EVS) II and head-up display (HUD) II for the G280 are now FAA certified, the company announced late last week. Combined, the systems–which are integrated with the G280’s Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion-based PlaneView280 avionics–allow pilots to see terrain, runways, taxiways and possible obstructions in low-visibility conditions.
With this FAA certification, G280s equipped with the systems get operational credit, meaning they can land in weather conditions that would be prohibitive for non-equipped aircraft. Under current FAA regulations, “EVS can be used in lieu of natural vision to descend below DA/DH or MDA down to 100 feet above touchdown zone elevation on certain instrument approach procedures, provided specific regulatory conditions are met.” However, last month the FAA proposed a rule that would allow a descent below DA/DH or MDA all the way to the runway using just EVS to detect visual references.
EVS II/HUD II is now available as an option on new G280s and as a retrofit for in-service aircraft. The systems are standard on Gulfstream’s in-production large-cabin aircraft–the G450, G550 and G650. EVS II with a head-down display is available as an option on the midsize G150.
To date, Gulfstream’s EVS I and II are installed on more than 800 in-service aircraft.
