Sagem Défense Sécurité will supply avionics for the 322 UH-145 helicopters (plus 30 options) selected by the U.S. Army on June 30. Subsidiary Sagem Avionics will handle equipment integration, final assembly and product support from its facility in Grand Prairie, Texas.
On the Eurocopter EC 145 derivative, Sagem will supply an autopilot system, including two APM 2000 flight control computers, APIRS (attitude and positioning inertial reference system) sensors and a control unit. The UH-145 will also be fitted with a Sagem-made miscellaneous flight data acquisition unit and flight control actuators. The flight control sensors feature fiber-optic gyro and silicon accelerometer technologies.
For the Safran group–via Sagem and Turbomeca–the light utility helicopter program will be worth an estimated $450 million, including spare parts and services.
The UH-145, to be designated UH-72A in U.S. Army service, will replace Hueys and will largely be used on domestic and humanitarian missions.
