Martinair has become the first European airline to sign up for Pratt & Whitney’s innovative EcoPower engine washing system.

Claimed to bring fuel burn savings of up to 2 percent, the EcoPower system has been tested on Martinair’s fleet of PW4000 engines in May. P&W said it expects to be contracted to wash not only Martinair’s engines but also those of other airlines using Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.

The system replaces the traditional detergent-based engine washing process with a closed-loop, environmentally friendly system using atomized de-ionized water, which P&W claims is not only more effective but faster.
