Plymouth Airport in Massachusetts has never had a true FBO, but recent runway expansions, the new ILS serving 4,300-foot Runway 6 and the airport’s willingness to encourage hangar building have led to increasing amounts of business jet traffic. Aircraft management company Professional Airways is putting the finishing touches on its new FBO terminal and hangar facility and plans to hold a grand opening next month.

When 23-year-old Barrington Irving needed flight handling and fuel sourcing for his 26,800-mile flight around the world, Universal Weather & Aviation chairman Greg Evans offered to donate his company’s services. Irving, who founded nonprofit Experience Aviation to promote aviation careers, flew a modified Columbia 400 with 160 gallons of usable fuel, departing from Miami on March 23 and returning on June 27.
Premier Air president Ash Vij and vice president Rita Vij are building a new Million Air FBO franchise at Tucson International Airport. The FBO will be the first Million Air facility in Arizona. Million Air Tucson will cost about $5 million to build and will include a two-story 20,000-sq-ft terminal and 20,000-sq-ft hangar, as well as a theater room and the traditional Million Air refreshment bar.
Airport information resource Globalair.com’s Version 2.0 release includes new features, such as weather information, new search capabilities and fresher, more accurate fuel pricing. The fuel pricing system requires that FBOs or their verified representatives update prices. To participate, FBOs must provide updates at least every 30 days.
On July 12 Irving Aviation celebrated the grand reopening of its Gander, Newfoundland FBO, a 5,000-sq-ft facility built to replace the original FBO terminal. “Our Gander FBO is strategically located on the Great Circle Route and serves as a technical refueling stop,” said Arthur Irving Jr., v-p of Irving Oil. Irving Aviation, an affiliate of Irving Oil, is open 24/7/365.
A proposal to require California’s Santa Monica Municipal Airport (SMO) to measure jet taxi and idle times during a one-year period is dead, according to the National Air Transportation Association (NATA). “Assembly Bill 2501,” NATA said, “failed to gather enough votes for passage out of the California Senate Committee on Transportation and Housing.
On July 18, FBO developer Air 51 broke ground on a new FBO at Lexington, Kentucky’s Blue Grass Airport. Lexington currently has only one FBO, a Tac Air facility. Air 51 intends its Lexington FBO to be the first in a chain of facilities, according to a spokeswoman. The FBO, which will be situated on a two-acre plot, should take four to six months to build and will include a 10,000-sq-ft storage hangar and 6,000-sq-ft FBO terminal.
Geneva AirPark, a private hangar/ office development at Switzerland’s Geneva International Airport, received official building approval, according to developer Charles Aufranc, and construction will begin following ground preparation later this year. The new facility should open in the fourth quarter of next year, Aufranc said.
