Fuel logistics company World Fuel Services recently opened an office in São Paulo, with native Paulistano Celso Azuma appointed as business aviation sales executive for the region. The new office provides local “boots on the ground” expertise that will enable the company to serve the needs of FBOs and flight departments more effectively. The office handles the supply of Ascent brand aviation fuel, as well as the Alliance-World Fuel Services contract fuel program and other WFS business aviation-related products and services.

Fuel supplier Air BP is establishing an Operators University at Campo de San Marte Airport in São Paulo. At the new facility, Air BP instructors will train personnel using a range of pneumatic and hydraulic training simulators, cutting tools and a representative aircraft wing to practice both regular refueling operations and safety procedures. Trainees are assessed during and after the course.

Purdue University pilots flew an Embraer Phenom 100 partially powered by a mix of biofuel and jet-A to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh on Friday. The biofuel blend–a mixture of a camelina-based biofuel and jet-A provided by the U.S. Air Force–was used to power one of the Phenom’s engines; the other engine ran on jet-A alone. Key flight performance measurements were recorded and will be studied.

Shell Fuel distributor Eastern Aviation Fuels has bolstered its California footprint with the addition of three new FBO dealers. Landmark Aviation’s locations at San Diego International Airport (SAN), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Metropolitan Oakland International (OAK) will now be participating in the Shell AeroClass customer loyalty program, while LAX and OAK will also offer Shell contract fuel. Customs and immigration clearance is available at all three locations.

Aviation fuel supplier Air BP has signed an agreement with Poland’s Grupa Lotos to form a 50-50 joint-venture company to manage the supply, logistics and marketing of aviation fuel in the country. As part of the deal, Air BP has purchased half of Lotos Tank, Grupa Lotos’s aviation subsidiary. Initially the new company, known as Lotos-Air BP Poland, will operate at Gdansk, Warsaw and Krakow airports.

Aviat Husky with CNG system

Aviat Aircraft of Afton, Wyo., and Minneapolis-based Aviation Foundation of America introduced a dual fuel, piston-powered aircraft that operates on either compressed natural gas (CNG) or aviation gasoline (avgas) this week at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. The proof-of-concept aircraft fuel system is installed on a standard Aviat Husky A1-C fitted with a CNG belly tank.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Phillips 66’s Young Eagles Rebate program, which aids pilots who volunteer their time, aircraft and money to introduce youngsters to flight. Starting in 1994, Phillips 66 Aviation has provided a $1-per-gallon fuel rebate to help offset the cost of qualified Young Eagle flights through its nearly 900-strong FBO network, and since its inception has been used by approximately 5,000 pilots.

Air BP signed an agreement today with Grupa Lotos to form a new 50-50 joint venture–Lotos-Air BP Polska–to manage the supply, logistics and marketing of aviation fuel in Poland to airline and general aviation customers. Alex Junge, Air BP’s performance unit leader for northern and central Europe, said general aviation customers will be able to use their Air BP Sterling card at all the new joint-venture locations. Air BP expects the deal to be sealed in the next six to eight weeks, subject to competition authority approval.

The Paragon Network, a group of independent FBOs, has added Detroit to its growing web of national coverage. Metro Flight Services at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is the 24th FBO to join the group since its inception in early 2011. One of two FBOs on the field, Metro Flight is preparing to open a new 100,000 sq ft facility at the airport later this summer. The former site of a private flight department, it includes 45,000 sq ft of heated hangar space, 20,000 sq ft of climate controlled parking, and a 35,000 sq ft terminal, offices and shop space.

Fuel supplier Shell Aviation added a dozen newly branded FBOs to its distribution network during the first three months of this year.
