Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Avfuel has added a trio of FBOs to its lineup of more than 600 branded dealers. Bellingham Aviation Services at Bellingham International Airport, located near the Canadian border, between Vancouver, B.C., and Seattle, serves as a gateway to the Pacific Northwest, as well as a tech stop for Alaskan-bound fliers. The facility offers transient hangar space, GPUs, lav service, de-icing and oxygen. The FBO’s maintenance division provides services such as avionics, general maintenance, inspections and major repairs for both piston- and turbine-powered aircraft.

Several aviation groups, including NBAA and Airlines for America, applauded the Senate’s passage of legislation in the early hours on Saturday that prohibits operators of U.S. aircraft from participating in the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS), which would require them to buy carbon credits to cover aviation carbon dioxide emissions. The Senate bill, S.1956, the “European Union Emissions Trading Scheme Prohibition Act,” directs the transportation secretary to prevent all U.S.
Russian Helicopters and CAE are studying the joint development of helicopter flight simulators and pilot training programs in Tomilino, near Moscow. They will also discuss the joint creation of training centers elsewhere in Russia and other countries, the companies said. Under the proposed partnership, Russian Helicopters would “gain access to CAE’s technologies,” while CAE will in turn “have the opportunity to promote its products for Russian-built helicopters.”
Independent FBO network organization Paragon Aviation Group is launching Paragon Preferred, a program that will allow flight departments to receive customized fuel pricing from each participating Paragon network location. The program becomes operational on October 1, but customers can register now for Paragon Preferred. Customers can receive the preferred pricing data through the Paragon website, as an attached spreadsheet in a weekly email or via Fuelerlinx.
Airbus and China’s Tsinghua University have agreed to jointly investigate biofuel feedstocks in the country in an initiative designed to identify the best options for sustainable commercialization of alternative fuel supply for aviation. By early next year, Airbus hopes to have narrowed down the list of possible feedstocks, which will include cooking oil and algae, to the most promising alternative fuel solutions. With that decision taken, the partners intend to investigate ways to accelerate production.
Jetex Flight Support has introduced a new program that allows qualifying aircraft operators to buy fuel more easily without paying value added tax (VAT). The service is provided through the flight planning and support group’s new subsidiary, Jetex Fueling Services. Initially the program will be available in Austria, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Poland and Switzerland. Jetex intends to extend it to other countries in the future, according to program manager Ahmed Ghazal.
Canada’s National Research Council (Hall 4 Stand C18B) has been flight-testing its Dassault Falcon 20 fueled by biofuel while sampling the exhaust using a probe fitted to a Lockheed T-33 chase plane. The NRC believes the exercise to be a world first.
The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) served as an ideal destination this week for a series of biofuel demonstration flights that transported, among others, ICAO secretary general Raymond Benjamin to Rio de Janeiro for the sessions.
