Canada’s National Research Council (NRC) achieved a milestone in the quest for adoption of biofuels when it made the first flight by a civil jet powered by 100-percent unblended biofuel. At the end of October, the NRC’s Dassault Falcon 20 made the historic flight over Ottawa, burning a new biofuel known as ReadiJet, derived from Brassica carinata, an inedible oilseed crop provided by feedstock producer Agrisoma Biosciences.

During the test flight over Ottawa, biofuel made from oilseed crops flowed into the engines of a Falcon 20 captained by NRC pilot Tim Leslie.
Phillips 66 Aviation announced a new corporate credit card program featuring Avcard, a co-branded card with Phillips 66. The new Phillips 66 Aviation Wings Card will provide acceptance at more than 7,200 locations globally, along with double WingPoints at participating FBOs. The card can also be used for a variety of services beyond fuel, lubrication and maintenance, including aircraft cleaning, landing fees, oxygen, transportation, ground power, hangar rental, flight training, hotel reservations and catering, among others.

The new corporate card will serve pilots and flight departments flying into the nation’s largest network of branded FBOs. Some 870 FBOs are part of the Phillips 66 Aviation network.
Shell Aviation is showcasing 18 of the fuel dealers from its network of 428 FBOs nationwide here at the NBAA show and is offering a promotion for NBAA attendees looking to find out more about the services they provide. Visitors to the Shell Aviation booth (No. 1940) will be offered a chance to win a Bad Boy Buggy or the $10,000 cash equivalent in the form of MasterCard gift cards. Guests at the booth will be given a Flightplan, which will be stamped each time they speak with one of the FBO Shell fuel dealers.
Signaling its commitment to sustainability, Gulfstream flew its entire demonstration aircraft fleet–a G150, G280, G450, G550 and G650–to the NBAA Convention this week in Orlando, Fla., with both engines on each airplane burning a 50-50 blend of biofuel and jet-A. Each gallon of camelina-based Honeywell UOP Green Jet Fuel burned instead of petroleum-derived jet fuel reduces the carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions by 68 percent, based on life-cycle analysis, Gulfstream said.
Jetex Flight Support has taken its first major step to expansion in South America, particularly in Brazil. Earlier this month Jetex started supplying fuel to international operators in domestic airports in Brazil. The company sees Brazil as a growing market for private aviation, with business aircraft traffic at airports within 100 miles of São Paulo doubling during the past five years. Jetex said it will work directly with into-plane agents to help lower prices for their clients by eliminating third-party costs.
Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Avfuel has added a trio of FBOs to its lineup of more than 600 branded dealers. Bellingham Aviation Services at Bellingham International Airport, located near the Canadian border, between Vancouver, B.C., and Seattle, serves as a gateway to the Pacific Northwest, as well as a tech stop for Alaskan-bound fliers. The facility offers transient hangar space, GPUs, lav service, de-icing and oxygen. The FBO’s maintenance division provides services such as avionics, general maintenance, inspections and major repairs for both piston- and turbine-powered aircraft.
The UVair FBO Network, launched earlier this year, announced several new California members and one Texas facility to its growing lineup.
Several aviation groups, including NBAA and Airlines for America, applauded the Senate’s passage of legislation in the early hours on Saturday that prohibits operators of U.S. aircraft from participating in the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS), which would require them to buy carbon credits to cover aviation carbon dioxide emissions. The Senate bill, S.1956, the “European Union Emissions Trading Scheme Prohibition Act,” directs the transportation secretary to prevent all U.S.
