The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) said last week that they will be collaborating on issues and programs that protect, support and foster general aviation.
News and issues concerning general aviation, specifically airplanes and helicopters powered by piston and alternative engines (i.e., non-turbine powered aircraft). Subjects include aircraft, engines, personnel, acquisitions, accidents, safety, security and training.
The HB-SIA solar-powered aircraft, the first prototype of the Solar Impulse project, is to be unveiled next week on June 26 at Dübendorf air base, near Zurich, Switzerland. In an effort to cut down on the more than 2,000 false distress signals it receives each year from emergency locator transmitters (ELT) and emergency position indicating radio beacons, the Civil Air Patrol has launched its “Don’t Trash the Beacon” public awareness campaign. “The false-alarm rate is between 90- and 95-percent now,” said John Demarais, CAP’s deputy director for operations.
Although the dismal economy cast a pall over this year’s Women in Aviation conference–the association’s 20th–there were plenty of networking opportunities available to attendees. Looking to expand its franchise and better serve some of its members, the National Business Aviation Association announced plans last April to hold an event aimed specifically at the owners and operators of light business aircraft, a category the association loosely defines as those weighing less than 20,000 pounds.
For the first time in five years, worldwide deliveries of general aviation airplanes declined in 2008 (dragged down by slumping piston deliveries), but business jet and turboprop shipments increased by double digits and industry billings climbed to $24.8 billion, a 13.4-percent increase over 2007, according to an annual report released this morning by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA).
