Aircraft leasing company General Electric Commercial Aviation Services (GECAS) has converted options held on six GE90-110B1L-powered Boeing 777F cargo aircraft, bringing its 777 fleet to 39, of which 15 have been delivered. The latest order, which can be changed to cover passenger variants, brings GECAS 777F orders to 14 and its total Boeing fleet to 378.

German-based MTU Aero Engines is to build a new low-pressure turbine factory in Rzeszów, southeast Poland. MTU Aero Engines Polska will develop and produce rotor and stator blades for low-pressure turbines as well as assemble those turbines. It will also repair parts. Construction will start this fall and will launch production early in 2009. MTU will invest €50 million ($65 million) over three years.
Pratt & Whitney is preparing five more ground-test engines to support seven units already participating in the F135 engine development and demonstration program for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). Two of the five will be used to qualify propulsion-system configuration ahead of planned delivery of the first-flight engine to Lockheed Martin by year’s end.

Volvo Aero has delivered a number of post-certification enhancements to the RM12 twin turboshaft engine that powers the Saab Gripen. Some of these have been adopted by General Electric, whose F404 was adapted by Volvo for the single-engine Swedish fighter. The company said further improvements are possible, although its main emphasis is on developing lighter weight components for commercial airliner powerplants.
