FBO chain and airport real estate manager Sheltair is nearing completion on the first of three planned phases in a $13.6 million new development project at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. Expected to open within the first quarter of the year, the first phase of the facility will include 134,806 sq ft of hangar and office space on more than 11 acres.

“Not since Sheltair opened its [then] state-of-the-art FLL campus 23 years ago, has a project of this magnitude been constructed to support the general aviation community on the airfield,” said Sheltair CEO Jerry Holland. “When complete it will be the largest general aviation complex ever constructed at this airport, he added.

The new facility will offer build-to-suit office spaces ranging from 2,500 to 5,600 sq ft, and the adjoining hangars—specially constructed from concrete to provide severe weather protectio—will feature 28-foot-high doors, tall enough to shelter aircraft up to the size of a Gulfstream 650. The complex includes Sheltair’s current FBO, with an on-site 24 hour U.S. Customs office, car rental, café, dining area and executive conference rooms.

At NBAA’s annual Schedulers & Dispatchers conference today, a Sheltair spokeswoman told AIN phase two of the project is expected to include five hangars with adjoining office space facing the phase one complex, adding approximately 94,000 sq ft. Both hangar areas will feature direct access to the airport’s runway, which is currently being lengthened to 8,000 feet.

The Florida-based company has also created a new sales division and promoted two individuals to key positions within it. Karen Kroeppel, previously Sheltair’s special projects manager, was named regional sales manager for the Northeast, while Joan Kuntz, most recently the company’s director of properties at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and Pompano Beach Airpark, was tapped as Southeast regional sales manager.
