Honeywell’s Apex Will Go into Grob’s SPn Utility Jet

Grob’s SPn Utility Jet, a carbon-fiber light business twinjet introduced here on Monday, will enter production with the Honeywell Apex avionics system, according to company officials.

The $7.1 million jet will feature a four-display version of Apex that includes a pair of 15-inch primary flight displays flanking two vertically stacked 10-inch multifunction displays. According to the German aircraft builder, TCAS II traffic alert system, the enhanced ground proximity warning system and dual flight management systems will be standard. Grob surprised almost everybody at Paris by bringing a flyable prototype of the airplane here to Le Bourget for the show.

Honeywell’s Apex avionics system, referred to internally as the son of Primus Epic, appears to be a highly capable cockpit, but it has failed to attract serious interest from very many airframe OEMs as systems from Avidyne, Garmin and Rockwell Collins have so far taken the lion’s share of business in the light jet and very light jet market segments.
