Finland Buys SL-AMRAAM
Finland is the latest customer for Raytheon and Kongsberg’s National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS), following Norway, the Netherlands, Spain and the U.S. NASAMS is a networked air defense system that includes Raytheon’s MPQ-64F1 Sentinel radar and the surface-launched version of the AIM-120 AMRAAM. NASAMS was developed in the 1990s, and is now in its NASAMS II configuration, as first delivered to Norway in 2007. In the U.S., NASAMS was installed in the Washington national capital region in 2005 to cover the presidential inauguration, and has remained in use there since.
Meanwhile, last month Raytheon fired a surface-launched AIM-9X Sidewinder from an LAU-7A/D launcher mounted on a Humvee in a demonstration for the U.S. Marine Corps. The company is also in the developmental test phase of the AIM-9X Block II, which adds a lock-on-after-launch capability, an enhanced fuze and a one-way forward-quarter datalink.
