Mark Baker, a long-time general aviation pilot and former executive at Home Depot and Scotts Miracle Gro, was named AOPA president and CEO on Tuesday, succeeding Craig Fuller. Baker, who officially takes the reins of the association on September 6, will be the fifth AOPA president since the organization was founded nearly 75 years ago.

FAA Administrator Michael Huerta will speak at the opening general session of the 2013 NBAA Convention on October 22 in Las Vegas, the association announced yesterday. “We are pleased to welcome Administrator Huerta to our 2013 convention, and we look forward to hearing his thoughts and perspectives on the issues of greatest concern to the industry,” said NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen.

Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) founder Paul Poberezny, 91, died this morning at Evergreen Retirement Village in Oshkosh, Wis., after a battle with cancer, EAA said. The Poberezny family also released the following statement: “We deeply appreciate all the support shown to Paul and Audrey over the past five months. As Paul often said, he considers himself a millionaire because through aviation he made a million friends. He leaves an unmatched legacy in aviation and can be best remembered by all the people who discovered aviation through his inspiration to create EAA.

Wheels Up CEO Kenny Dichter has recruited executives from NetJets’ Executive Jet Management subsidiary for his new private aviation club’s management team. Robert Garrymore, most recently EJM’s president, is now president for ventures at Wheels Up. Serving alongside him as executive v-p for ventures is Ronald Silverman, who was EJM’s senior v-p of aircraft management, sales and owner services.

FAA Air Traffic Organization COO David Grizzle plans to step down from his position in December, according to the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (Natca). “Throughout [his] tenure at the ATO, we worked together to strengthen the Natca-FAA collaborative relationship. That has resulted in many successes, from modernization to labor relations, which have helped continue to make our National Airspace System the world’s safest and most efficient,” said Natca president Paul Rinaldi. “We thank David for his contributions.”

In accordance with the NBAA bylaws, the nominating committee has proposed five people for election to the board of directors at the next annual meeting of the association, to be held on October 23 in Las Vegas. Paul Anderson of UTFlight, David Everitt of Harsco and Douglas Schwartz of ConocoPhillips were nominated for re-election to the board, each for a three-year term. Leslie Kenne of Oshkosh Corp. and Richard Walsh of Hewlett-Packard were nominated for initial election to the board, also for three-year terms.

StandardAero appointed Leo Mendoza as the new regional sales leader for its Latin American airlines and fleets business. Mendoza’s appointment complements the company’s objectives to expand its business footprint and overall investment in the Latin American region, augmenting its existing market leadership and highlighting its capabilities in turboprop and turbofan maintenance, repair and overhaul. Mendoza has a background in aviation sales management with Pratt & Whitney and MTU.

The fifth annual Business Aviation in Latin America (BALA) summit will open tomorrow morning, August 15, at LABACE, focusing on exploration of the latest developments in the business aviation industry and new challenges and business opportunities for the future.

According to Panagiotis Panagopoulos, CEO of the Aeropodium organizing group, the BALA summit has grown in size and scope every year and more than 80 attendees are expected at this year’s event.

Kelly Ortberg has been promoted from president of Rockwell Collins to CEO, succeeding chairman and CEO Clay Jones, who has retired after 15 years at the helm. The company announced a restructuring and rotation of leadership within its commercial systems organization.
