Two Bond Offshore Helicopters search-and-rescue crewmen, winch operators Paul Walters and Andrew Cowx, have been awarded the 2012 Billy Deacon SAR Memorial Trophy, in recognition of their role in a dramatic North Sea rescue last December. Their Eurocopter AS332L2 Super Puma was first to reach the rig standby vessel Vos Sailor, which had lost power in darkness and poor sea conditions. Despite an injured foot, Cowx volunteered to remain on the deck of the stricken vessel for an hour. There, he managed the rescue of three remaining members of the ship’s crew.

Craig Fuller, president and CEO of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), will step down from his position as soon as a successor is identified. The association also promoted Sean Collins from manager of the pilot information center to eastern regional manager.
Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) president Gregory Principato intends to step down from leadership of the association at the end of June.
Bombardier Flexjet appointed Ryan McGinn as sales director for the New York City territory, where he will sell fractional jet ownership, jet cards and charter brokerage services to clients in the area. McGinn comes to Flexjet from a 20-year career at Callaway Golf, where he was the top sales director for the past 10 years. He also has previous experience in the aviation industry through his tenure at America West Airlines, where he served as a customer service representative for three years.
Business jet remanufacturer Nextant Aerospace bolstered its global sales team as it prepares to announce its next remanufactured model. Jay Heublein has been promoted to executive vice president of global sales and marketing. The Cleveland-based company also hired Peter Walker as vice president of sales for Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific, and Richard “Butch” Lang as U.S. regional sales director. Nextant recently delivered its 26th 400XT and has a more than $175 million backlog for these remanufactured Beechjets.
Duluth, Minn.-based Cirrus Aircraft promoted executive vice president and COO Pat Waddick to president and COO. CEO Dale Klapmeier said the timing of the announcement couldn’t be better, as the company begins “to accelerate the Vision SF50 Jet program as we aim to fly the first conforming certification aircraft within the next 12 months.” In his new role, Waddick will have responsibility for daily company operations, including sales and service, manufacturing and supply chain, product development and administration.
Less than a week after touting his company’s accomplishments at Heli-Expo 2013, Eurocopter CEO Dr. Lutz Bertling, 50, has resigned effective April 30, parent company EADS announced this morning. He joined Eurocopter in 2003 and became CEO in 2006. During his tenure, Eurocopter’s sales nearly doubled to $8.3 billion.
NBAA director of seminars Sandy Wirtz is retiring at the end of this week. Since joining NBAA in 1996, Wirtz has helped ensure that NBAA’s seminars, conferences, workshops and committee meetings run smoothly from start to finish. She has been responsible for site visits at each of NBAA’s events, contracts with vendors, negotiating hotel agreements, signing speakers and coordinating on-site logistics. NBAA has not yet named Wirtz’s successor, and a spokesman told AIN that NBAA plans to hire a meeting planner.
Flexjet appointed Jason Weiss as its new vice president of operations. In his new role, he is responsible for managing the fractional operator’s flight operations, training, technical operations, operations analysis and fleet management, the owner operations center and procurement. Weiss–who replaces David Gross, who is retiring from Flexjet after 13 years–comes from NetJets, where he was the vice president of crew resource planning.
Peg Billson, formerly president of BBA Aviation Legacy Support, has been promoted to president and CEO of the company’s recently organized BBA Aviation Aftermarket Services division. The aftermarket services division includes subsidiaries Ontic, Dallas Airmotive, Premier Turbines, H+S Aviation, International Turbine Service, W.H. Barrett Turbine Engine Company, International Governor Services and APPH. The company’s Dallas Airmotive subsidiary has announced a restructuring of its U.S. sales organization.
The annual Salute to Excellence Awards dinner, held on Wednesday, March 6, was, for the 50th year, the premier evening event of Heli-Expo. HAI encourages the highest standards of professionalism in the helicopter industry, saluting those who deserve to be recognized for their contributions to the rotorcraft community. This year, Helicopter Association International’s Salute to Excellence Awards recognized the achievements and merits of a few individuals and organizations among its more than 3,000 members.
